I live in the Jerash refugee camp. I’m originally from Palestine. We stitch to maintain the Palestinian heritage and we teach embroidery to the next generations. The Gioia project is beneficial, it helps us cover our expanses, its better than nothing. It helps us financially and also artistically. For us, the art of embroidery is like smoking cigarettes, we can’t enjoy sitting without it.  Even now at my old age, i can’t sit without stitching, i must, but now i use glasses to see better.”

I live in the Jerash refugee camp. Jerash is a remote area, we don’t have factories or job opportunities, especially jobs for women, if any of us has sewing skills, we must go to a different prefecture to find a job in a factory, and often the families object. This is why embroidery at home is much easier, women can work while looking after their children.

I live in Jerash, I’m originally from Palestine. The Gioia project helped me a lot with my financial struggles. We also want to work to maintain the Palestinian heritage thought embroidery. It reminds us of how our grandmothers use to stitch, how they used the needle and we want to teach this art to our children. Even with the new technologies our art is still alive, and we hope that handmade products will live on. Thanks to Gioia, who markets our products, our social activities also increased, women often meet and work together on the same project. Many positive aspects came along with this project.

I am originally from Palestine, I came with my family to Jordan when the 67 war started, at the time I was 12 and my father didn’t want me to go to school in a foreign country, he said I can read and write and that was enough, so since, I dedicated my life to stitching and embroidery. I am now 63 years old, I am divorced and my father passed away several years ago, I must work to make a living, I work 8 hours a day in a factory and the conditions are really hard, very cold in winter and very hot in summer. With Gioia’s project I could start working from home and won’t need to use pubic transportation early mornings, it would really make my life much easier at this age.
